First Floor Addition to Clubhouse
at Worksop Town Football Club

Project Brief

  • The addition of a first floor to an existing single storey brick construction, tiled pitched roof clubhouse at WTFC.
  • The first floor will be added to provide a function room, a'la carte restaurant and sponsors suite, serviced by a commercial kitchen, cocktail bar and WC's located on the same floor.
  • The existing ground floor will be stripped of all existing services including the Bar, Beer Cellar and WC's and modernised with updated facilities including the provision for new offices, bar and plant room.
  • The anticipated programme indicated a completion for the beginning of the 2003/2004 football season.
  • Nick Shipp Architects provided full Architectural Services

Project Design Description

The design for the Worksop Town Football Clubhouse evolved from the brief to procure a first floor addition to the existing single storey pitched roof clubhouse. The existing building was no longer adequate for WTFC ambitions as they pursue their goal to enter the Conference league. NSA aimed to design a first floor addition which stood out from buildings in the area, acting as a distinct reference point and advertising WTFC whilst also transforming the impoverished architectural style of the original building.

The challenge was to meet the above criteria and integrate it with the existing ground constructed from an inexpensive local brick. NSA interpreted this as a solid base, onto which a lighter structure would be placed, providing synergy in composition and integration.

The first floor envelope is structurally supported by a steel portal frame (fig.03) an efficient structural system meeting the demands of a fast track construction period.

Fig.04 WTFC Elevation showing iroko timber cladding

The elevations of the first floor addition are clad in untreated iroko hard wood timber fixed to battens on a steel sub-frame. The iroko boards kept both horizontally and vertically separated allows the timber to move and air to circulate within the construction. The strongly defined horizontal courses of timber break down the surface of the elevation, giving a highly textured appearance. (fig.04).

The roof surface is constructed from mill finished aluminium composite panels, which were specified to meet both the construction practicalities, programme and to be visually distinct (fig.03),

The careful use and application of materials both in detail design and the overall design has ensured that WTFC have a clubhouse which bears testament to their aspirations and will function inline with their evolving needs.
