Examples of Projects Completed

For all projects, we would be delighted to explain and describe our work further in the belief that future work draws on a wealth, depth and breadth of expertise available for the benefit of new Clients/old Clients, new projects or working members of the Practice.

SECTOR - PUBLIC/ ENTERTAINMENT

Public buildings are invariably an interesting challenge; the following projects describe a sector area of work that the Practice is striving to find further work within. A good understanding of the potential for fun and delight are key. A thorough knowledge of the correct application of statutory controls and regulations from a plethora of sources are indispensable for quick success. Links to other team professionals with valuable experience in these specific areas of work, from structures and cost control, to planning and environmental consultants, are arranged.

A three/four star hotel complex, as part of a larger leisure and residential beachfront development, Fete, Ghana, 1991-present

The hotel is situated in the masterplan scheme, on a prominentary of the Atlantic coastline, 60km west of Accra. 120 rooms are planned in earth-bermed structures, built into the slopes of a sea facing hill and naturally ventilated using innovative ecological systems appropriate to hot humid climates. Entrance hall, restaurants and bars, leisure sitting areas and convention areas are grouped around a series of courtyards that respond to a 'massive' architecture, prevalent on the coastline in the form of trading /slave forts. An unmistakable contemporary treatment is profound in the architectural design. Sports and cultural facilities have been given priority space and the scheme is backed by a comprehensive and practical services and ancillary organisation that will work brilliantly. Its important in West Africa!

SECTOR - SCHOOLS

The Practice is focusing on expanding its portfolio in this exciting area of architectural work, using the considerable experience previously gained from projects and sympathetic building design and constructional techniques. Sustainable design philosophies are highly applicable in educational environments and resources in this field will be invested to procure practical and innovative design.

Pavarotti Project, Monrovia, Liberia, 1998-2001

A creation of a Children's village on an ex-Military base in the heart of Monrovia, focused the attention of the Pavarotti foundation and Warchild. The need was to address the missing school years of young adults caught up in 8 years of Civil War. The answer was an educational community with a small element of residential accomodation, that would enable numeracy, literacy and vocational training to take place in a sympathetic environment. Sport, Cultural activity and outreach were important factors. The design philosophy for new eco-structures is followed throughout the project for cooling, ventilation, energy, water usage and sustainable buildings using a unique building system constructed on site using locally available raw materials.

SECTOR - CHURCHES

The opportunity arose whilst in Ghana in 1991 as a consultant architect to the Bristol Bond Project, to design a multi purpose building for the village and schools, that was primarily a Church. Unlike any other type of building project, the need to inspire rises to the front of the agenda. We need constant reminding that this facet of our work is always important.
