an ongoing development project on 145 hectares adjoining an unspoilt mile of atlantic beach that aims to create the first end-destination residential & tourism resort in ghana. akwaaba park promises to be a superior amenity development with facilities associated with a beachfront club-hotel, 18 hole golf course, tennis, health spa & fitness centre. a mixed 600 house and apartment residential scheme is set in a tropical landscape and utilises hot humid design principles that rely on natural ventilation, and induction airflow strategies for cooling with innovative energy and resource saving devices. the orientation of the houses are set to maximise the climatic advantages of wind and sun, the site specific advantages for view and aspect, and principles for the environmental, innovative and cost efficient design of the houses in a flexible arrangement offering four/five house types, each of varying size; a design style runs as a thread through the entire scheme with parallel orientations to work with prevailing coastal winds. at the main east entrance of the site, a naturally ventilated multi purpose auditorium is located, capable of flexibility as an informal conference venue as well as use for performance, music, dance and religious or institutional use by schools and colleges.

this last part of a group of projects to remodel the setting of a house completed for clients in 1997 is designed in collaboration with landscape architects robin williams associates to complement a family lifestyle that enjoys outdoor living and transform an area of land near the house with recreational terraces. a remodelling of the topographical form banishes cars to a discreet part of the garden and a new curving driveway encloses a large lawned area that meets the house over structural shrubs in raised brick planting beds and a series of ‘falling’ terraced retaining walls

as a continuing program of work to develop the grounds of this country house, originally designed buy NSA in 1997 the final elements of the drive, regrading of land and dining terrace have now been completed.

an initial planting phase involved the positioning of new trees, including wild cherry, field maple, juneberry, swedish whitebeam, hawthorn, beech, japanese crap, laurel, lilac and oak trees. FInal planting will now be integrated in to the grounds maintenance.

the york stone dining terrace now feeds directly of the main kitchen dining area of the house, with new french doors opening on to a water rill and fountain.

the music school • monkton • completes

the music school at monkton completes, which brings to an end an exciting and complex project ready for students to occupy after haft term. from the practice rooms, studios and I.T suite to the bespoke and imaginative design of the main rehearsal hall. monkton now have a state of the art facility from which to teach all elements of music.

the project represents a contemporary approach to the redevelopment and extension of Monkton’s music teaching and performance facilities on a landscaped setting in the south west corner of the school campus. The ‘U’ shaped plan utilises the existing stone-walled 2 storey structure to provide 12 practice suites, teaching and ancillary rooms that wrap the new full height orchestra-sized rehearsal hall placed at the centre. The new double height entrance hub separates this from 3 state of the art recording studios that offer variable facilities for learning the technical skills associated with both performance and recording. An exceptional and high technical specification for acoustic insulation and performance quality is central to the design and these are achieved using practical, imaginative and low-cost robust solutions. The insulation and ventilation strategies future-proof the facility, together with consideration for extending a substantial pv array on the flat rehearsal hall roof. The project completes in December 2011

the music school approaches completion. a busy site is producing great excitement as we move closer to the finishing line. many key design elements are now being fitted including the bespoke rehearsal hall acoustic panels and curved glass balustrades within the main entrance lobby.

garden room • hampshire • completes

august 2011 saw the completion of the garden room in hampshire. A successful 8 month programme was marked with the installation of the client fit out including cinema screen and full size snooker table. The new additions provide an exciting counter point to the expansive glazed corner sliding doors and contemporary open plan living.
