the music school at monkton completes, which brings to an end an exciting and complex project ready for students to occupy after haft term. from the practice rooms, studios and I.T suite to the bespoke and imaginative design of the main rehearsal hall. monkton now have a state of the art facility from which to teach all elements of music.

the music school approaches completion. a busy site is producing great excitement as we move closer to the finishing line. many key design elements are now being fitted including the bespoke rehearsal hall acoustic panels and curved glass balustrades within the main entrance lobby.

august 2011 saw the completion of the garden room in hampshire. A successful 8 month programme was marked with the installation of the client fit out including cinema screen and full size snooker table. The new additions provide an exciting counter point to the expansive glazed corner sliding doors and contemporary open plan living.

the project represents a contemporary approach to the redevelopment and extension of Monkton’s music teaching and performance facilities on a landscaped setting in the south west corner of the school campus. The ‘U’ shaped plan utilises the existing stone-walled 2 storey structure to provide 12 practice suites, teaching and ancillary rooms that wrap the new full height orchestra-sized rehearsal hall placed at the centre. The new double height entrance hub separates this from 3 state of the art recording studios that offer variable facilities for learning the technical skills associated with both performance and recording. An exceptional and high technical specification for acoustic insulation and performance quality is central to the design and these are achieved using practical, imaginative and low-cost robust solutions. The insulation and ventilation strategies future-proof the facility, together with consideration for extending a substantial pv array on the flat rehearsal hall roof. The project completes in December 2011

the programme for the music school is progressing for a December completion with the new rehearsal hall structural shell well under way. With the roof structure installed first fix mechanical and electrical and acoustic partitions will now progress.

a large recreation space for the family, as much a part of the home as possible, was briefed. The house, (rebuilt behind a retained element of existing facade completed by NSA in 1997), has access through existing cellar space to a new earth-bermed family room for cinema/tv, snooker, table tennis, chill zone and parties. Our key challenge was to re-orientate the centre of gravity for family life in a useful space that would remain well-connected to the activities of the main house. Opportunities for quality sunlight into a very deep plan space gave rise to the design of a 7m long cantilevered structure-free corner with six panels of sliding glass screens, let-into wall pockets. Environmental considerations were met with an exceptionally high insulation value, a high level of mechanical ventilation and a fully automated and optimised dnx light, sound and environmental control system

this scheme for this grade 2 listed building reinvents the space previously organised as a residential care home with a new mixed-use development for hq offices for the Wilsher Group, high performance and training advisors. 13 suited bed-&-breakfast guest bedrooms, presented us with challenges for a design strategy to meet flexible and adaptable requirements from a mixed use enterprise, as well as deliver a building with diverse functions at its core. structural engineering solutions assisted reinvention of the space for contemporary alterations to the entrance, dining and welcome spaces that lead to other areas which have been sensitively reconfigured, strenghthened and rationalised to meet the full requirements of the listed buildings officer. demolition of the conservatory and construction of a contemporary structural glass and stone garden/reception/perforamnce room, for which planning has been given, will shortly be carried out at the rear to transform the appearance of the building in context with it’s beautiful setting in the Monkton valley and newly landscaped gardens
