8 projects 2011 st josephs school • launceston • cornwall,

commissioned by St Josephs School to design a mixed use selection of projects, we obtained a major planning permission in early 2011 to meet the requirements of the school’s redevelopment plans.  Access to new safe and secure parking areas link pedestrians with the refurbished and re-engineered main building in a rational and thoughtful redesign for the main school building, a previous convent. These rediscover previous structural integrity and utilise material and elevational treatments lost to attritional development of the building in recent times. Existing inadequate dining facilities are replaced by an off-site produced green-roofed timber-framed canteen building that will flexibly operate to assist with drama/music production in the school’s principal hall.  The significant new building on site, within the planning consent, is one that replaces worn-out prefabricated classroom structures with a facility for 2 replacement classrooms, a dance centre on the ground floor and a music centre and 6th form hub within an upper storey timber-framed and clad building.   A further new building forms the nucleus of an indoor multi-purpose hall designed to be capable of future extension which is located at the extremity of the academic campus, beyond which an innovative new timber bridge over the river kensey links the school with playing fields and an athletics track with all-weather tennis/sports pitches located at a higher level
