sandown pool 2006 esher • surrey

we were commissioned to provide an exciting internal pool space within a high quality building design meeting the context of the heavily timber structured rear elevation of the house (completed by nsa 2 years earlier) , whilst ensuring it is read as a separate object.  The design form breaks up the mass and purveys a more fragile element of a building where the entire glazed west elevation opens to follow two design themes;  a fragile element that continues to carry on the extensive glazed and timber brise soleil-ed element of the private aspect of the house that enhances both the function of the building and the occupant’s south and west facing enjoyment of the garden. The stepping up and flipping up of the ‘armadillo’ roof is restrained back to a 3.5m high internal magnificent 20m long art glass ‘spine’ wall, created by danny lane, which runs north-south and the full length of the proposed building, providing visual direction, height datum, context linking and connection for the two buildings
